After being cooped up by rainy weather for three days, I was ready for a hike in the woods. The East side of the river along here is particularly enchanting, with old growth Oaks and Cypress, lush ferns and Spanish Moss. After so much rain, the trails were very wet with large puddles, but I didn't mind.
This is a hike in a little known state park. Access is limited to ~30 people per day. It is mostly a wetlands area, and is a great place to see birds that wade or dive for their food. Of course there are deer, raccoons, armadillos, snakes, bobcats and feral pigs here too. Eventually, this park will be over 20,000 acres, if the state manages to find the money to purchase all...
This hike is in Jonathan Dickinson State Park. First let me explain a few things. I am an annual Florida State Parks pass holder. A little 7.3 mile hike in the woods in northern Palm Beach County, FL. Along the way I saw Mourning Doves, Gray Squirrels, Wild Turkeys, Feral Pigs, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Swallow-tailed Kites and Cat Birds. I saw tracks of Raccoons, Bobcats and Coyotes. I also heard the calls of Sand Hill Cranes and Red Bellied Woodpeckers.
Today I wanted to explore a corner of Jonathan Dickinson State Park that I had never been in before. First let me explain something. I am an Annual Pass holder. I entered the Ocean To Lake Trail from Indiantown Rd, after parking at Riverbend Park. The first part of the hike is through dense jungle along the Loxahatchee River. There are several points where you can get a good look at original...
A short loop trail about a mile long with good parking and an overlook on the St. Lucie Canal (Okeechobee Waterway).
