After reviewing the host of literature on the key hikes to do in Kauai, we decided on this loop trail that provided breathtaking views of the Napali Coast. In researching, we came across a great website that offered great resources on hikes throughout the Islands. Strongly recommend checking out http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/hiking_kauai/ for up-to-date information and a great forum section with comments and questions from hikers. We hoped to get on the trail by 7:30am...
We drove to the top and hiked down into the Waimea Canyon, then hiked back up to the car.
We picked this hike from "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" and improvised a bit on our return by taking the Black Pipe Trail to a four wheel drive road on our return. As the book predicted, the water flow at the falls was rather low as it is summer, but the views were very nice.
Awesome hike. When it looked like rainy weather for the day we headed to the south side for some sun, and decided to hike this trail knowing that it would be dryer on this side of the island. We were right. We had a beautiful sunny day and downright hot sometimes. We saw wild goats on the way down and the way up, as well as the nene goose. The trail is well...
Bev wanted to do something active today and has always liked the Waimea Canyon, so I chose the Kukui Trail. It didn't look like it would be too hard at only about five miles, but it is steep, rough, and slippery. The mileage stats don't look impressive, but check out the altitude changes. We hiked down to the Waimea River at the bottom for a late lunch and then started the climb...
Mary Jo and I parked at the Koke'e lodge and hiked from the Nu'alolo trailhead to Lolo Vista and the Cliff Trail and back up the Awa trail and back to the lodge to complete the 11+ mile loop. This was my first attemp at uploading to FB from a cell phone app hope it works the views were incredible!
On our trip to Kauai, David and I wanted to find a trail that would give us great views of the canyon and coast. There were two hikes that interested us, an 11 mile loop (Nu'alolo to Awa'awapuhi) and the 5 mile out-and-back Kukui trail. You can find fantastic maps and trail guides on the Guide of Hawaii site. We decided on the 11 mile loop from the reviews on the beautiful vistas...
Nice hike towards the Ocean with very nice views.
Start
at mile 13-14 at Pu’u Hinahina Lookout on Wailmea Canyon Rd. The trail leads from the upper end of the
lookout and soon dips steeply downhill. At
the Cliff Trail, take the Black Pipe Trail (to the right), then the Canyon
trail splits off on the left. Most of the trail intersections are signed but a map of the area is essential. The canyon
trail then follows the edge of the canyon with several great looks at...
A fun day hike in the red dirt Waimea Canyon. The hiking poles we left in the condo would have been nice for the steeper parts, but we did fine without them. Close to the waterfall there is a steep incline that has pretty loose gravel and dirt. Good hiking shoes will be best. And definitely shoes you don't mind getting RED! The falls had a light flow, but we were there...
