This is a very nice hike on the south side of Point Mugu State Park. The views are great. I hike this going out on the La Jolla Canyon trail stay right at the first fire road. Too slippery to descend the Mugu Peak Direct Trail, so descended the trail to the north and circled back to repeat the Direct ascent. With about 50 lbs in the pack this was a great workout.
This trip was a spur of the moment decisions and so we hadnt planned out this hike or prepared for it.. which means no water, snacks, flashlights and warm colthes. we started out a little late in the afternoon and didnt see too many people. A beautiful trek through the tall grasses of La Jolla Valley en route to Mugu Peak. The first 3/4 mile prove to be the most challenging due to loose footing and steep inclines for approximately 700ft of elevation gain. After that, you're home free! Beware of ticks in the valley!
