Jomeokee Trail at Pilot Mountain State Park
Jomeokee Trail at Pilot Mountain State Park
Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, United States

Easy: 0.9 miles, 1 hour or less
0.9 mile trail near Pilot Mountain, North Carolina

The short Jomeokee Trail is an easy hike that circumnavigates the big pinnacle of Pilot Mountain.  The name of the trail comes from the lexicon of the Saura Indians, who used the mountain as a natural tower from which they could watch the surroundings. Jomeokee also served as a landmark along the trail that from Virginia to Georgia. The orange-blazed...

Moderate: 3.5 miles, 1-3 hours
Best hikes near the top of Pilot Mountain, the signature peak northwest of Winston-Salem.

You don't expect to see a mountain popping up from the gently rolling landscape of the North Carolina Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point). But Pilot Mountain is like that: full of surprises. For hikers, the best surprise is that the trails, terrain and views from on high are good enough to make you forget you're a few hours east of the...

Pilot Mountain Hike

Hiking | 7.9 miles
Yesterday, for National Trails Day, we headed to Pilot Mountain for a day hike.  There was a charity bike ride at the park and so a lot of traffic and parking delays at the summit, so we hiked up along the Mountain Trail.  We parked at the southern end of the Mountain Section of the park at the Corridor Trail parking lot and started our hike.  The trail starts at the southern...

The Corridor - Pilot Mountain State Park

Hiking | 13.5 miles
After hiking "The Grandfather Trail" at Grandfather Mountain, and some of the numerous waterfall trails I have this year, I must say that "The Corridor" is somewhat of a let down for me personally.  There was very little see other than a somewhat unique view of Pilot Mountain about halfway through.  This trail zig zags its way from the Yadkin River Access of the Pilot Mountain State Park to Pilot Mountain.  A...

Pilot Mountain State Park River Sections, North Carolina, United States
Hiking | 8.8 miles
I went on a series of hikes at the River Sections of Pilot Mountain State Park northwest of Winston-Salem, NC.These are great get-away-from-it-all hikes: few people use this section of Pilot Mountain State Park, and the hiking is mostly easy to moderate with only a few mild climbs. Trip write-up to come at Two-Heel Drive.

Hiking | 7.1 miles
The River Section of Pilot Mountain State Park is in a very remote section of countryside northwest of Winston-Salem (in contrast to Pilot Mountain's main section, which is right next door to U.S. Route 52).Trails are not super plentiful, but if you like taking walks along a lazy river, it's worth checking out. I went in winter to get better GPS reception; I imagine it would be gorgeous in the fall. In...

Pilot Mountain 2/27/11 - To the Pinnacle from the Bottom

Hiking | 7.7 miles
This beauty of a hike starts along side the Pinnacle Hotel Road.  Park in a marked gravel parking lot, cross the street and begin at the Mountain Trail trailhead just to the left. The trail begins going towards the famous Pilot Mountain Knob, then begins to veer off to the left.  For a mile and a half, you will meander up and down until the trail finally begins a steep climb up....

Pilot Mountain SP - Ledge Spring Trail

Hiking | 2.0 miles
This hike is a workout!  With some pretty decent elevation gain/loss (you climb the last 500 feet in less than a mile), it is a hike for folks looking to have a bit more rugged, and bit more secluded, view of the mountainous geology.  The yellow circle-blazed trail is about 2 miles as a loop.  The trail starts out down the Jomeokee Trail, once you pass the little pinnacle you can turn...

Solo hike at Pilot Mountain State Park.  Left my car at parking lot on top.  Made a large loop by connecting several trails (in order):  Ledge Spring, Grindstone, Grassy Ridge, Mountain, Ledge Spring, Little Pinnacle Overlook.  This was my first time on Grassy Ridge and Mountain.  Sunny with temperatures in low 50s.

Although the Mountain Trail is listed as strenuous, it's a cake walk compared to the Ledge Spring Trail. There is very little elevation change on Mountain Trail from its trail head at Pinnacle Hotel Rd. until near the very end where it dead ends into Ledge Spring Trail. On this map, Ledge Spring Trail begins where you see the switchback at about 1485 ft. From there, Ledge Spring Trail is a constant...
