Hiking in Nebraska

Whether it's an urban trek around a man-made lake, or an overnight backpacking trip, Nebraska offers endless opportunities for exploring, fitness and outdoor recreation. Western Nebraska's Pine Ridge is ideal for daytrips or even an overnight hike from end-to-end. Cyclists can cross the entire state on The Cowboy Trail, stay fit on the Steamboat Trace or tackle the hills at Plattsmouth State Park. Fontanelle Forest and Neale Woods offer peace and seclusion right in the heart of the busy city. From the rugged hills of the panhandle, to the bluffs and river bottoms along the Missouri River, Nebraska has something for everyone.

Hiking | 4.2 miles
Good day for a hike.  We started off near GIfford Farm.  The snow was very deep.   A few drifts along History Trail forced us to walk a bit closer to the steep slopes than normal.  We eventually lost History Trail somewhere before Prairie Trail and ended up descending back down to the tracks - which we walked to Stream Trail.

Hiking | 10.2 miles
This was our second 10 Mile hike for the the Hiking Merit Badge this year.  We chose an urban hike that we could do in an evening.  Ten boys and 5 adults completed the entire trip with a 6th adult joining us for the last half. (Kathy brought ice cream sandwiches out to Hall County Park for our supper break and then walked back to Suck's Lake with us.)The weather was great....

Hiking | 5.5 miles
Just about every March Troop 114 does a 10 mile hike starting at Ft. Kearny SRA.  We used to hike from the campground to the east side of Bassway Strip and Highway 10 but a little more than 3 years ago the old rail road bridge that crossed the Platte River was burned in a controlled burn gone bad.Now we hike from the campground to the bridge and then back to camp....

Lee planned this 20 mile hike for the troop. We met at Hall County Park at 7:00 AM.  We left the park at 7:30.  It was just beginning to get light out and about 26 degrees.  There was very little wind.  We had 13 scouts and 4 leaders on the hike.  We had 1 Webelos hike with his father from the park to Shady Bend Road. Jerry our support vehicle driver picked...

Hiking | 11.0 miles
Hiking with Troop 114.  We had a bunch of younger boys and they were only ready for 10 miles so we only did half of the planned hike.  It was a gorgeous day about 40 degrees to start and 50 by the end of the hike. There was a strong breeze out of the north and the second half of the hike would have been mostly walking into the wind. This hike was...
