A hike at Mount Mitchell State Park, highest summit of the Appalachian Mountains. Writeup at Two-Heel Drive.
A day hike after camping out the night before at Mount Mitchell State PARk. We overslept, so we could only do part of the Mount Mitchell Trail. Awesome views especially atop Mount Craig. Can't wait to head back and backpack the entire trail. Until next time.
This track is the descent portion of a hike on the Mt. Mitchell trail....forgot to turn on GPS tracking for the ascent. We started at Black Mountain Campground and hiked the Mt. Mitchell Trail to the summit. On the return, we hiked the Mt. Mitchell trail until it intersected with the Higgans Bald trail which we followed until it looped back around to the lower portion of the Mt. Mitchell trail
On the way back from Cincinnati, stopped at Mount Mitchell for a hike in the morning. Trail was pretty much empty, though there were a lot of folks in suits at the visitor's center.
Got started around 10 am. Took old mitchell trail from the info center up to the summit. Then took deep gap trail to Mount Craig, which had a spectacular view.My battery on my phone died on Mt. Craig so double the distance for this one. I must say, when we got to Mt. Craig I had one of the best lunches in my life. Just sitting there with a sandwich looking out...
This past weekend, we headed up to Mount Mitchell
to hike up to the highest point in North Carolina and the Eastern
United States. Sure, you can drive to the top, but that's no fun! We
left the Triangle early Saturday morning and drove to the campground at
the base of Mount Mitchell. We stayed at the Poplar group site at Briar
Bottom Campground, adjacent to Black Mountain Campground. After
checking in,...
Deep Gap Trail at Mt Michell (aka Black Mountain Crest Trail)
Burnsville, North Carolina, United States
Hiking | 0.8 miles

This trail starts at the top of Mt Michelle and is also called the "Black Mountain Crest Trail." You can hike for as long or as short of a time as you'd like. We only did 1 mi out, 1 mi back (essentially to Mt Craig's summit) - long version would be >10 mi. Expect high elevation (can be cold, windy), but great views, and a fun scramble up rocks at times....

Took the "Old" Mitchell Trail up to Mt. Mitchell today.
I had to turn my EveryTrail app off halfway through because it drained my battery, but I got some good pictures beforehand. After that point, the trail becomes much more steep, and actually meets up with the Mountains-To-Sea Trail until you reach the small trail to the summit of the mountain. On the return trip (we parked at the Ranger Station and had...
This was a good long hike. We started out by getting up around 5am and 29F. Had a good breakfast of biscuits and gravy(THANKS to Jerry H and Scott C). Hit the trail around 6:30am. Worked off the cold after a mile or so and hit a pretty good pace. The trail was full of great views, water crossings, snow, and ice. The top was great, but the wind had us heading...
An easy hike to what's sure to be a nice waterfall in the wet season or after a good rain.
Hiked from Black Mountain Campground up the Mt. Mitchel trail and looped around the Higgin's Bald trail. Nice small waterfall on Sefrock creek on Higgin's Bald trail. Nice camping area were we turned around just above 5000 feet. We left at 8:30 am from campground and were to the turn around at 10:30 am, we got back to the campground at 12:00.
We left the campground at 9am to hike
to the summit. The first part of the
trail is climbing switchbacks through laurel & rhododendron. It does have
some open expanses but no views. By 0.7 miles you have gone from 3000 to
3500 feet. After one mile the
rhododendron starts getting thick and close to the trail. It is a
moderately steep traverse to the southwest with a few switchbacks as you
climb. At 1.4 miles, 4200 feet you...
