Start at the main Monte Sano trailhead following the blue-blazed North Plateau Trail, cross the entry road, pass by the park office on your right, and then keep the picnic pavilion on your left until reaching the overlook. At the north end of the overlook, do not follow the North Plateau Trail, but go through the vehicle barrier across the road. (From this point on, trail signage is clear and easy to...
We started from the hikers parking lot. There are two ways to find the trail from here. One is just crossing the street and taking the North Plateau loop, the other is to turn right on the street, walk a few yards and turn left on the trail (it should be signed). We did the first option. The trail took us to the overlook point (reachable with the car too), the sky...
From the main trailhead, I crossed the entry road to the gravelled and bordered pathway going by the park office. The trail passes by a picnic pavilion reaches an overlook before circling behind the Von Braun observatory. Two large cabins are along the trail on the north side. The path crosses the Fire Tower Trail and the park entrance, and then reaches an overlook at the McKay Hollow trailhead. I wound around...
We took the McCay Hollow trail from the pavilion south of the parking lot. The first part is particularly steep. Right on our left at the beginning of the trail we saw the Blue Spring waterfalls, very dry due to the season. We went down in the valley, the trail then follows the river crossing it some times. Because of time constraints instead of following the McCay Hollow trail up to O'Shaughnessy point we...
We hiked to Natural Well from the Monte Sano picnic area. The trail descends about 800 feet then ascends another 600 feet
with lots of ups and downs to arrive at this unique and amazing natural rock formation. The Natural Well formation is actually a pit cave. This initial drop is about 200 feet, and I'm sure it connects to some amazing caves inside the mountain. There is a fence to keep you safe,...
The South Plataeu Loop is an easy 3.5 mile loop on level terrain. The trail starts in the hiker's parking lot at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL just a short drive (10-15 minutes tops) from downtown Huntsville. Follow the white blazes carefuly. There are a number of intersecting trails and if you are not carefull you could end up with a very different destination. This a great trail for beginner hikers. ...
Just starting out with using the EveryTrail app on my iphone so we did one of the easiest trails on Monte Sano. We started at the hiker's parking lot and headed in the direction of the Lodge. Its a great trail for beginners (such as myself) and we brought the dogs along and they had no problems as well!
I took my son and a friend of his on "The Sinks" trail at Monte Sano State Park. We saw the awesome sink hole that drains the area. Unfortunately it was filled with debris, so no great pictures here.
Followed the Sinks Trail signs from the hiker's parking lot. The trail itself is somewhat difficult to walk on-it is mostly tree root and rocks-but was manageable. Lots of rock formations to see and a few sink holes as well. A slightly more advanced trail than the North or South Plateau Loops but can be done quickly while keeping a good pace. The Sink Trail itself dead-ends on the Old Bankhead Road,...
This trip started at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL. The trailhead begins by the picnic pavilion. To find the trailhead you have to go to the bluff and you will see a small pavillion to the right. The trailhead is just to the right where there is a sign warning of dangerous bluffs. The trail is actually McKay Hollow trail that merges with the Natural Wells trail. You can also...
Beautiful (hot) day for a morning hike with my older son. I had a hint that the Stone Cuts trail would take us by some dramatic outcroppings of rock, but I never expected to have to go through a series of rock tunnels. A couple of them were rather long and dark, making me wish I had brought a flashlight. (You never know what is lurking in the dark.)

It’s steep down to the junction of Sinks and Mtn Mist.Take a left at Mtn Mist and follow it back to the Closed Bankhead Pkwy, entering the Pkwy about 0.2 miles from where you park.
The hike was organized by the Huntsville Young Professionals. The plan was to have a moderate 3hrs group hike on Montesano. We started from the hikers parking lot and we took the South Plateau Loop trail to O'Shaughnessy Point. The trail is pretty easy; more like a walking trail, good also for running or biking. Passed O'Shaughnessy Point we turned on the Mountain Mist trail for a few steps before taking a...

Took Sinks Trail down to Goat Trail, south to Warpath Ridge Trail, north to O'Shaughnessy Point (great view), then continued north along Mountain Mist Trail (nice rock formations along here!) back to Sinks Trail.
