Hiking in Montana

Montana is a treasure-trove of sweeping vistas, pristine trout streams, peaceful hiking trails, and powder-rich ski areas. Montana is a promised land whether you're planning to backpack deep into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness, pedal a scenic byway or lonely single track, or ski a thousand foot couloir of blower, cold smoke powder.

Montana is home to two major National Parks - Glacier and Yellowstone - and numerous state parks and recreation sites. Glacier National Park is over 1,000,000 acres of forests, alpine meadows, and lakes. The spectacular glaciated landscape is a hikers paradise. Yellowstone National Park is the world's first national park and boasts geothermal wonders, such as Old Faithful, evidence of one of the world's largest active volcanoes.

Hoping to bag an elk or land a blue-ribbon trout? The forests, plains, and streams of Montana are home to premiere fishing and hunting. Four distinct seasons and a vast array of dynamic ecosystems provide sportsmen and sportwomen a lifetime of opportunity to ply their hobby.

Hiking, rafting, horseback riding, mountain biking, skiing, snowmobiling. Montana has it all whether it's summer, winter, springtime or autumn, recreation under the Big Sky is full of endless possibilities.

Awesome hike in some absolutely gorgeous country. My father and I started off with a boat rides from the Many Glacier Hotel across Swiftcurrent Lake. There is a fifth of a mile long paved trail connecting Swiftcurrent Lake from Lake Josephine. Once departing Morning Eagle, the fun old boat serving Lake Josephine, the trail heads to the North for a short ways before heading West and steadily ascending towards Upper Grinnell Lake.The...

A hike up Swan Creek to Hyalite Peak
by joelwhite1017 on Aug 27, 2009
Gallatin Canyon, Montana, United States
Hiking | 13.2 miles
We drove up the Moose Creek Road to its end at Swan Creek (see Moose Creek-Swan Creek Drive). We set up a base camp and hiked east, up Swan Creek to the Divide Trail, then turned north to Hyalite Peak. The wildflowers up high were great. The branches to Swan Creek were spectacular, as was the view from the summit. We ate raspberries, thimble berries and huckleberries on the way. A clatter...

by joelwhite1017 on Aug 07, 2009
Big Sky, Montana, United States
Hiking | 8.2 miles
Walking the trail to Cinnamon Mountain is one of the classic Big Sky hikes. The trail is well graded from bottom to top, with lots of forest and meadow hiking. The views along the trail are great - and then you get to the summit. You understand why they put a lookout tower up here. There are views in every direction. A splendid hike.
