Descend into the enormous and otherworldly crater of Maui's Haleakala National Park
Maui's highest point is the summit of Haleakala, where you'll find the immense caldera of possibly the largest dormant volcano on the planet. This short hike descends into the crater to explore the dramatic history of the mountain with its many cinder cones and lava lava flows. Elevation gain: • 1,600ft (from 8,300 – 9,900ft) Tips: •...
Dramatic and always scenic. Hiking the Waihee ridgeline up in the Maui mountains.
This 4.5 mile round-trip hike in West Maui Forest Reserve promises lush scenery, great valley views and some dramatic ridge-line hiking. As on the windward side of all Hawaiian islands, you're more likely to be in for wet weather and muddy conditions. But it's not all that bad, since this means waterfalls are plentiful, the vegetation is greener...

The road the leads to this hike will dead end at a marked gate. Just park on the side of the road and enter through the gate on foot. This is a great trail for hiking or mountain biking! We brought our dogs, and this hike is very dog friendly. Just remember lots of water for the pupsThe only bummer is the very steep, asphalt road for the first half mile of the...
This was the first short hike of a two-hike day. We'd never been to the 'Iao Valley before but it looked like a "must see" location and it really was beautiful. There are a pair of very short paved paths near the parking area, and then a dirt trail runs west from one of those paths. It splits into multiple paths that generally follow the Iao Stream west. We followed these paths for...
Scooter trip and hike to Waihee Valley in the West Maui Mountains
The
Waihee Ridge Trail is short but uphill the entire way to Lanilili peak
(2569’) at the end of the hike. You’ll climb pretty much non-stop for
about 1,500’, with very little flat or downhill, until you reach the peak. Of course, the hike back is nearly all downhill. Along
the way up there is a bench with view of a large waterfall, but since the
falls are something like a mile...
This is a hike I took with my husband Dave during our trip to Maui. It was in 'Iao Valley State Park, which is in the shadow of the 'Iao Needle, a natural rock pinnacle. It takes you through a beautiful rainforest along a stream.
This valley was once home to many native Hawaiians, and was the scene of a fierce battle between the forces of King Kamehameha I and the armies of...
We drove about 1 hr from Kihei. From Kahului, take 340 north on the Kahekii Hwy. About 0.9 mi from mile marker 6, watch for the Mendes Ranch on the right. The turnoff for the Boy Scout camp is immediately on the left. You can park here or continue another 0.8 mi up the hill to reach the parking are next to the Boy Scout Camp. On this day, there were only...
fantastic little hike down to the top of the first cinder cone. Air was as still as could be, and completely silent within the crater-valley. Very few folks on the trail, too. Combined the silence of being in a closed room all by yourself, with the expansiveness of in a massive valley, being able to see for miles. Amazing experience.
My final hike here on the Island of Maui. Descending 1,600' in 2.5 miles down into the crater among the cinder cones. When I started I at 9AM I found that I was alone after the first little overlook. When I made it down to split rock. I found thatI was the only soul for miles. It was so quite and bereft of sound that it was almost eerie.
Haleakala Crater (One-Way: Keonehe`ehe`e [Sliding Sands] Trailhead to Halemau`u Trailhead)
Kaonoulu, Hawaii, United States
Hiking | 12.1 miles
Hiking | 12.1 miles
Did a gorgeous hike on the Sliding Sands trail and then the Halemau'u Trail ... Parked at the trailhead for the Halemau'u Trail (at about 8000 feet), hitched a ride to the summit, then started hiking at about 11 AM. Total trip time was just over 5 hours, with about 4 hours of walking. It was surprisingly warm (in the mid-high 60s). Dropped down to about 6500' inside the crater (from 10,000'...
Turn off Kekaulike Hwy in Kula onto Waipoli Road. Follow the road way up the switchbacks till you reach Polipoli Spring State Recreational Area. The first section of the road is paved but the last 30 minutes is dirt and gravel. 4WD recommended. From the parking lot at Polipoli park there are options for multiple hiking paths. We just followed a portion on the main trail down the mountain for about 1.5 miles. It was...
Very short hike. Sad to see litter along the trail. Wear or carry hiking sandals as you have to do a water crossing to get a good view of the falls.
Trip to Twin Falls on the Hana road. Had to carry A. on my back across the stream to get the final falls, which he thought was really cool.
This is a reverse track from the third waterfall back to the road . I thought I did not have my iphone when we started this hike. This is tracked from the third waterfall back to the road so it is incomplete. This is on of my favorite hikes on Maui. I have hiked this twice before. This hike is best attempted with either good strapped hiking sandals or do what I did....
