Hiking | 0.9 miles (21 miles away)
The Karst View Trail provides visitors the chance to learn a bit more about karst topography and Wisconsin caves. Sinkholes are the highlight of this trail, including those above Cave of the Mounds, as well as several separate systems. Impressive views of Wisconsin's Driftless Area can be seen from the School Sinkhole. Stop at the Historic Barn Discovery Center and search for evidence of ancient life with the Barn Fossil Hunt. Hikers will enjoy...

Pewit's Nest Gorge - Best Wisconsin Swimming Hole
by Deltafxn on Aug 20, 2010
Hiking | 0.5 miles (33 miles away)
Wisconsin's best swimming hole by far! We wanted to skip the noisy, loud, crowds at nearby Devil's Lake and hike and swim somewhere private and completely natural. The wonderful staff at Devil's Lake National Park provided a trail map for the Pewitt's Nest Gorge State Natural Area which is a short drive away. This totally natural place, no picnic tables, no guards, no people other than hikers and fellow swimmers and explorers and...

A short hike (20 minutes round trip) from Arboretum Visitor Center to a City of Madison storm water detention pond, in Curtis Prairie, the world's first and oldest restored prairie.  This pond was built in the late 1960's and covers about 3 acres that were formerly research control plots. The 100 acre watershed south of Curtis Prairie dumps an estimated 60 acre feet of storm water on the prairie each year. IAT Day 23 (map 66 & 65f)
by kwestlake on Jun 30, 2010
Five Points, Wisconsin, United States
Hiking | 11.7 miles (8.4 miles away)
I woke up at about 3:30 excited to get back to hiking. Today was nice weather, not so humid as it's been! Wisconsin's Prairies continue to delight me, especially in the morning with their bath of morning dew! Most of today's hike was on road but it was hilly, curvy and twisty country farmland.. Though the pavement is harder on my feet I certainly enjoyed the scenes and the lack of Mosquitos...

Cross Plains, Wisconsin, United States
Hiking | 16.3 miles (12.6 miles away)
The landscapes are getting hillier and prettier as I get further North which presented some nice photo opportunities today. Unfortunately this heat rash is still plaguing me if I'm on the trail after about 12:30, when the sun gets intense in the sky. Other than that, it was a fun segment which mixed the roads in with 3 different trail segments. Nice! Weather: 80s and sunny Trail conditions: Good on most trails though Indian section...
