A short hike from the end of the road in Kokee State Park. It starts out easy and ends hard, particularly when wet and muddy. Some spectacular views but the native hawaiian rain forest has a lot of plants you rarely see anywhere else.

We got a late start after some morning maintenance on our condo, so we looked for a shorter hike than the Kukui Trail we did last week. After lunch at the Shrimp Station in Waimea, we headed up to the top of Waimea Canyon to Kokee State Park and the trailhead for the Phea Trail.

Take Rt. 550 into Kokee SP all the way to the end at Puu o Kila Lookout. The Pihea trail heads out along the ridge. There are views on both sides. After almost a mile, the trail drops off the ridge and descends steeply into the Alaskai Swamp. For many of the steep sections, there is a boardwalk and steps. The Pihea Vista trail links the parking lot with the Alakai swamp trail. It consists of a mile each way with lots of muddy, slick terrain.
