Explore the exotic Na Pali coastline in search of secluded beaches and spectacular waterfalls.
When hiking the trails of Kauai you can be forgiven for expecting to meet a T-Rex around the next bend, or to spot Indiana Jones running by with one hand on his hat and the other grasping some ancient artifact. Hollywood is a big fan of the this Hawaiian island's spectacular landscape, which is why it's a popular filming location for movies like Raiders...
Combining two of Kauai's best hikes take us from dramatic coastal cliffs to an exotic boardwalked swamp trail.
Kauai, the oldest and westernmost inhabited Hawaiian island has a terrain and climate like nowhere else. This hike combines some of the best features of Kauai into an unforgettable hiking experience. Take a westerly drive around Kauai until you run out of road and you'll find yourself at the Pu'u O Kila Lookout marveling at the views of the plunging...
Climb face of the fabled sleeping giant, and prey you don't wake him!
Nounou Mountain rises from the leeward (Eastern) side of Kauai, known for some of the better island weather. Local legend tells of a giant who feasted so much at a party in his honor that he laid down for a nap and never awoke, and when you see the mountain's resemblance to a sleeping giant from the nearby town of Kapa'a you can see why the legend...
Trips
The day was great for a hike. It had not rained in several days and the trail was dry. There would be areas where the kukui nuts littered the ground.
After reviewing the host of literature on the key hikes to do in Kauai, we decided on this loop trail that provided breathtaking views of the Napali Coast. In researching, we came across a great website that offered great resources on hikes throughout the Islands. Strongly recommend checking out http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/hiking_kauai/ for up-to-date information and a great forum section with comments and questions from hikers. We hoped to get on the trail by 7:30am...
We got up early and drove in the dark past Waimea Canyon to the Alakai Swamp Trail to try to avoid the low clouds and rain that we expected to come later in the day. The trail took us several hours. There is a lot of up and down to the trail, but lucky for us, the ground was dry. You get tired of hearing your feet drumming on the boardwalk. The...
This was a great early morning hike through tropical paradise.
This was a brilliant hike along the coast. We experienced great weather, and ate wild guava the length of the trip.
This is the entire route of the Kalalau trail in Kauai. The Kalalau trail is considered one of the most scenic hikes in the world.
We drove to the top and hiked down into the Waimea Canyon, then hiked back up to the car.
We started out from the north side of the trail about 7:30 AM. To get to the trailhead, turn left (west) at Kapa Ka Street as you are driving north. Drive to the end of the road where a large water tank sits. This is the powerline trailhead. We started at the north end of the trail and I would highly suggest this as there are more trees at the south end of the...
Another great hike on Kauai
Trail/dirt road from Kilauea to the Pools of Mokolea. It can be driven, but only by 4 wheel drive (particularly when it has been raining). The road itself is pretty dull, but the payoff is the end of the road where the pools are located.
These falls are a pretty much hidden kinda waterfall terrace. They are located in the Lihue-Koloa Forest Reserve and part of the numerous Waialeale Falls (Wai'ale'ale = "ripling waters").The hike is pretty easy, even if muddy, you´ll find the way without gps-device.I met some guys there, who used their body boards for using on one of those small rivers. There´s a rivertube which leads directly to the Waialeale Falls and as those guys told me,...
We got a late start after some morning maintenance on our condo, so we looked for a shorter hike than the Kukui Trail we did last week. After lunch at the Shrimp Station in Waimea, we headed up to the top of Waimea Canyon to Kokee State Park and the trailhead for the Phea Trail.
A short hike from the end of the road in Kokee State Park. It starts out easy and ends hard, particularly when wet and muddy. Some spectacular views but the native hawaiian rain forest has a lot of plants you rarely see anywhere else.
Not sues of the trail. Some of the route is on road. Beautiful route.
