Daniel and I backpacked for three days in southern Indiana on his 13th birthday. There much more to write, but it's late and I need to go to bed.
I did manage to loose my tent on the way back to the van on the third day. I had not secured my load well (thinking we were only a few miles from the end) and foolishly placed my tent just under the hood...
A little hike and some photography. I started out at the parking lot of Donaldson Cave. I followed the road past Hammer Cemetery until I joined Trail 7. I took Trail 7 around to the Stagecoach trail. The Stagecoach trail takes you down to Pioneer Village. From their I followed the creek around to Donaldson Cave.

This hike start in front of the Indiana Dunes Nature Center, trail 7 trail head. I hiked to what we call ecology cove, which is the triangle of trail 7,4, and 8.
We collected 30 arabidopsis lyrata plants from the west hillside of Beach House Blowout and another 29 along first dune from the water while we made our way to Furnessville Blowout.
This trail starts by going to the back of the dog park off Dunn, and crossing the stone path across the river. After climbing the stairs you are immediately rewarded with beautiful views across the lake and dam. Follow the lakeside trail by going down beside the fence which overlooks the dam. Nice little dog-walking loop. Doggy bag's provided, but still quite a bit of poop on trail. (C'mon people) All trails are wide, mown grass. Lots of wildlife. Saw and caught frogs and snakes. May use this as a trail running loop since it is so close to my house. More info on the park here...
We took phenology readings for our tagged plants. While we were going through the swale, we saw that there were monarch butterflies and bummble bees on the rough blazing star that were in bloom. On one plant, a praying mantis was munching on a butterfly. We finished the day with some ground cover in the jack pine savanna.
Through rain and high winds we trudged from the Beverly Shores South Shore stop to the Dune Park stop. Along the way we encountered many blooming flowers and budding plants. Despite the weather, I thought the park was gorgeous and can't wait to go back.
