Hiking | 5.9 miles (2.6 miles away)
I started my trip from the Land Trust parking lot. I took the Bluffline Trail from the Northern side of the parking and walked all the way till the intersection with Amandale Trail. The first part of the hike is pretty easy, the trail is smooth and flat. From the intersection with Amandale Trail I took a little side trip, on Amandale Trail, just to check out the path which is pretty...

Stone Cuts Trail - Monte Sano State Park
by CarlNelson on Feb 25, 2012
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Hiking | 4.4 miles (4.4 miles away)
Start at the main Monte Sano trailhead following the blue-blazed North Plateau Trail, cross the entry road, pass by the park office on your right, and then keep the picnic pavilion on your left until reaching the overlook.  At the north end of the overlook, do not follow the North Plateau Trail, but go through the vehicle barrier across the road.  (From this point on, trail signage is clear and easy to...

Walls of Jericho Trail

Hiking | 6.7 miles (33 miles away)
We started the trail pretty late around 12:00am. The weather was awesome, it was that time of the year when leaves just began falling. The first part of the trail is all downhill but not so difficult. The trail is pretty smooth with just some rocks. We reached Hurricane creek in about 1hr because we had to catch up with our group ahead of us. We passed the bridge and we walked a...

North Plateau Loop - Monte Sano State Park

Hiking | 2.1 miles (4.4 miles away)
From the main trailhead, I crossed the entry road to the gravelled and bordered pathway going by the park office.  The trail passes by a picnic pavilion reaches an overlook before circling behind the Von Braun observatory.  Two large cabins are along the trail on the north side.  The path crosses the Fire Tower Trail and the park entrance, and then reaches an overlook at the McKay Hollow trailhead.  I wound around...

Wade Mountain Hike
by Geoeric on Jul 19, 2009
Bonita, Cape Verde
Hiking | 0.0 miles (5.3 miles away)
Wade mountain preserve offers a nice day hike with multiple trails and moderate to light hiking.  The trails are cut through moderate to heavily forested areas.  There are many resting areas that included benches on the lower trails.  Very well marked trails using diamonds.  Aquatic fossils can be found around the Devil's Racetrack loop.  Some trails suitable for mountain biking although there will be some very technical sections.

Monte Sano State Park - Natural Well Trail
by rgetman on Sep 23, 2012
HUNTSVILLE, AL, United States
Hiking | 3.5 miles (4.0 miles away)
We hiked to Natural Well from the Monte Sano picnic area.  The trail descends about 800 feet then ascends another 600 feet  with lots of ups and downs to arrive at this unique and amazing natural rock formation.  The Natural Well formation is actually a pit cave.  This initial drop is about 200 feet, and I'm sure it connects to some amazing caves inside the  mountain.  There is a fence to keep you safe,...

Alms House & Wildflower Trails - Montesano Natural Preserve
by DanyLo on Aug 05, 2012
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Hiking | 2.3 miles (2.6 miles away)
From the Land Trust Parking Lot I took the Alms House Trail down to the bottom of Montesano. This part of the trail is downhill and rocky. It also crosses some streams that unfortunately during this season are dry. I crosses the Railroad Trail and I took a trail that follows the stream on the left side. The trail goes by the Fagan Springs (for some reasons the Fagan Springs Trail doesn't...

Mountain Mist Trail - Montesano State Park
by DanyLo on Nov 07, 2010
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Hiking | 4.6 miles (4.4 miles away)
We started from the hikers parking lot. There are two ways to find the trail from here. One is just crossing the street and taking the North Plateau loop, the other is to turn right on the street, walk a few yards and turn left on the trail (it should be signed). We did the first option. The trail took us to the overlook point (reachable with the car too), the sky...

McCay Hollow Trail - Montesano State Park
by DanyLo on Sep 18, 2010
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Hiking | 2.3 miles (3.9 miles away)
We took the McCay Hollow trail from the pavilion south of the parking lot. The first part is particularly steep. Right on our left at the beginning of the trail we saw the Blue Spring waterfalls, very dry due to the season. We went down in the valley, the trail then follows the river crossing it some times. Because of time constraints instead of following the McCay Hollow trail up to O'Shaughnessy point we...

Hiking | 1.3 miles (11.1 miles away)
We started from the small parking lot at the beginning of the trail. The trail is pretty easy and flat for the first part. It follows a creek and then turns left following the side of the mountain. The trail is marked but sometimes not well maintained and it is easy to loose it. A GPS device in this case is useful to keep yourself on the right path.At a certain point...

Hiking | 2.4 miles (21 miles away)
We reached the parking lot by turning left from AL-35 and crossing the railroad then left again. It is a very small parking lot and you can easily end up parking on the side of the road. The trail will be on your right. We first took the gravel road on the left and then made a right onto the trail. The way is initially easy slightly uphill. Unfortunately there is lots of trash...

What is the Walls of Jericho? The Walls of Jericho is a 750-acre natural area that is within the 8,943-acre Bear Hollow Mountain Wildlife Management Area (WMA), which is contiguous to the Skyline WMA in Alabama. The “Walls” is an impressive geological feature that forms a large bowl shaped amphitheater. Embedded in the limestone are bowling ball size holes from which water drips and spouts, creating a unique water feature. This amphitheater gives rise...

Land Trust Hike

Hiking | 4.2 miles (2.0 miles away)
This is a favorite loop of mine that show cases many of the features of the Monte Sano Preserve which is part of the Huntsville Land Trust.  The trailhead starts on Tollgate Road across from the Fagan Springs apartments which are reached from the Bankhead Parkway.  The trail starts on the old Railroad Bed Trail which was originally an incline railway going to the Monte Sano Hotel on top of the mountain. ...

Landtrust Railroad Bed-Fagan Springs Loop
by Becks-World on Nov 24, 2011

Hiking | 2.8 miles (2.0 miles away)
The Rail Road Bed Trail is on the Huntsville Land trust and one of the first "Rails to Trails" conversions in the state.  Originally an incline rail road to the Monte Hotel at the top of the mountain the railroad went broke and the tracks were torn up.  The bed of the trail remains.  This is a  mild to moderate hike with scenic rock formations and dry falls along the way.  to...

Monte Sano Loop Attempt
by npeshman on Mar 01, 2014
Huntsville, Alabama, United States
Hiking | 17.9 miles (2.6 miles away)
Attempted to encircle Monte Sano through a combination of Land Trust, private, and state park trails. I took my dog Leo with me and on the Natural Well trail while climbing one of the dry falls Leo slipped and pulled a couple muscles ending our trip just a mile or two short of the full loop.

Dry Falls and Three Caves - Montesano State Park

Hiking | 5.1 miles (2.6 miles away)
The path starts from the Land Trust parking lot on the way up to Montesano. Take the Bluffline trail from the Northern side of the parking lot and walk all the way till it intersects the Annandale trail. The first part of the hike is pretty easy, the trail is smooth and flat. At the intersection keep following the Bluffline trail as it bares left. It might be not so easy to see...
