Kilauea Craters Trail, Hawaii Volcanoes NP
Kilauea Craters Trail, Hawaii Volcanoes NP
Pahoa, Hawaii, United States

Moderate: 8.5 miles, Full day
Hiking inside the desolate crater of possibly the world's most active volcano.

The volcanic activity that created the Hawaiian island chain hasn't yet finished working on what's know as the 'Big Island' called Hawaii. If you need evidence, look no further than the lava flows and gas eruptions that spill from the Kilauea volcano located on the south-east side of the Big Island. You'll find Kilauea at Volcanoes National Park...

Hawai'i Chain of Craters Drive
Pahoa, Hawaii, United States

Easy: 22 miles, Half day
An unforgettable drive from the top of Kilauea in Hawai'i to the Pacific Ocean.

Many people come to Hawaii for the beaches, but Kilauea is a place you do not want to miss on any visit to the Big Island. Set aside an entire day, at least, for seeing Kilauea and all its sites. This drive down the Chain of Craters Drive is an unforgettable journey from the top of the volcano, past volcanic floes and craters from ages past, and down...

Hiking inside a crater, on a solidified lava lake, is a unique experience. It can be done in the Kilauea Iki crater, right at the heart of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.My dad and I have been meaning to hike this trail. As a matter of fact, we came back to the park despite the distance (about 3 hours of driving from the Kohala Coast) just for this hike, and it was...

Hawai'i: Big Island - Volcanoes National Park: Kīlauea Iki Trail
by ripcitybeaver on Jul 28, 2011
Volcano, Hawaii, United States
Hiking | 3.7 miles
This is a moderate 4-mile hike located with the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.  You start out hiking along the ridge of the crater.  About half-way through, you have descended all the way down into the crater, where you can still see gas and smoke escaping.

It was a rainy day on the volcano.  Unfortunately, some portions of the park are closed due to large amounts of Sulfur Dioxide emissions.  Walking along the bottom of a volcanic crater was incredible.

The Kilauea Iki Crater Trail is the most popular trail in the park. It is an easy 4 miles hike. The lava tube is at the other end of the trail (go counter-clock wise).

Started at the Visitor Center, walked across the street to the Volcano House and took the Halema'una Trail down to the floor of the Kilauea Caldera floor. It was rainforest all the way down. Walked across the the floor of the Caldera a short ways went back up through the rain forest to the top using the Byron Ledge Trail, We then were on the Kilauea Iki Trail and hiked down to its floor...

This is a nice easy trail with interesting plants along with steam vents and sulphur banks. The view to Halema'uma'u Crater isn't good from this part of the park.
