Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina, United States

Park northwest of Winston-Salem has some of the state's prettiest waterfalls east of the Appalachian Mountains.

Three easy strolls to picturesque waterfalls offer the perfect introduction to Hanging Rock State Park, the top hiking destination within an hour of the Triad cities of Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem. None of these falls are more than a mile from your car, so they're open to just about any ability level. They do require delicate footwork at...

Hanging Rock State Park 5/21/11 - Hanging Rock To Cooks Wall

Hiking | 7.3 miles
A nice, medium length hike that takes you to 4 of the best views in Hanging Rock State Park.  It begins on the Hanging Rock Trail which is about a 1.3 mile trail.  On the way back, I took the left turn onto Wolf Rock Trail which takes you Wolf Rock and House Rock, both excellent views, especially House Rock.  Last on the agenda, was reaching Cooks Wall, which has a very...

Moist and misty hike at the park northwest of Winston-Salem. This was my first hike to Cook's Wall. It was overcast, windy and rainy up there so I'm not sure I ever actually saw the Wall. Winter after a rain is a cool time to hike up here -- it seems very clean and shiny despite all the leaves having left the trees. Hike writeup at Two-Heel Drive.

High Points Loop at Hanging Rock State Park
by tommangan on May 15, 2011
Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina, United States
Hiking | 8.3 miles
This is a pretty cool loop, starting near the Hanging Rock lake and heading up to Moore's Knob, then going down and heading back up to the parallel ridge and finally capping it off with a jaunt to Hanging Rock and returning where I started from. (Funny how loops work that way).Trip writeup at Two-Heel Drive.

Hiking | 5.4 miles
I did the classic Moore's Knob Loop with a diversion around the shore of Hanging Rock Lake. The park is celebrating its 75th anniversary, so I went along to join the festivities. I doubled back through the campground to find the trail and continued the loop. Trip Writeup at Two-Heel Drive.

Hiking | 2.3 miles
Out-and-back hike to Cook's Wall at Hanging Rock State Park -- note this hike is 2.3 miles one way (had a GPS unit burp this time out) so this track only shows half of the hike (shows the whole route, however).Trip write-up at Two-Heel Drive.

Camping Trip to Hanging Rock

Hiking | 8.8 miles
This weekend, we went camping at Hanging Rock.  We got to the park at about 9 in the morning on Saturday, and it was already getting hot.  We first hiked up the Hanging Rock trail to Hanging Rock and stopped for a while to enjoy the view.  It was a little too hazy to see all the way to Winston-Salem, but the views were great nonetheless.  After that, we hiked down and...

This park is part of the "Mountain-to-Sea" trail.  The trail to where the rocks outcrop is 1.3 miles from the park headquarters and parking area.  The rock outcropping are at an elevation of 2,580 ft.  There are other trails that shoot off from the Hanging Rock trail.  Most of the trails are in wooded areas, so if you are looking for views, the best time for hiking in the area would be...

Pretty fall-colors hike to Moore's Knob at Hanging Rock State Park northwest of Winston-Salem, NC. This hike started out from the Tory's Den Trailhead, which adds four miles to the standard 4.9-mile Moore's Knob Loop Trail, a favorite of local hikers. Moore's Knob has  look-out tower with 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding terrain. The view is awesome, the best in the region by far. Trip write-up to come at Two-Heel Drive. ...

A Windy Day at Hanging Rock

Hiking | 7.8 miles
Yesterday, Sandy and I headed up to Hanging Rock State Park with the Raleigh hiking group for two more hikes in the 100 Classic Hikes series (#38 and #39). We parked at the visitor center and split into two groups with Brian leading the faster group and I led the slower group. This was fine with me, since I was carrying a backpack, which slows me down, especially on the steep climbs...

Hiking | 4.7 miles
Great day hike around Moore's Wall Loop with a good bunch of folks. Hike took about 4 hours with a long lunch break and a stop at the top of the wall. Great Vista view from the top and a pretty easy hike for most people. This hike is kid and pet friendly for the most part. Until next time.
