Spectacular Beauty in the Heart of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains
Deep in the heart of the Sangre De Cristo mountains in southern Colorado, Willow Lake provides a respite for the waters draining the Obstruction Peak glacial trough, as they rush north and west toward the central Colorado basin. If you tee off from the top of Obstruction Peak, Willow Lake is in the center of the dog-leg left, with 500 yard long meadow...
This 14er as unbelievable views of alpine lakes and the neighboring Crestone Needles
This is a beautiful overnight of just over 10 miles that will bring you to a the top of a non-technical 14er. Although Humboldt is pretty easy to climb you'll be impressed at the neighboring Crestone Needles which are some of the most dificult to climb. Make sure to bring a fishing pole as the South Colony Lakes are stocked with trout where you will...
Trips
Prior to our climb of Kit Carson Peak and Challenger Point, we took some time off to explore the upper reaches of Willow Creek. You'll discover a tarn at the base of Kit Carson Mountain, and you'll be rewarded with views of the drainage, as well as an abundance of wildflowers, rich in the water-soaked tundra. You'll stumble through the willows, and climb a few shelves before reaching the upper Willow Creek lake. ...
A beautiful day, but sometimes windy enough you had to turn your back to the wind or risk getting a mouthful of sand. It's hard work climbing these dunes; sometimes the sand is packed so you stay on top of it, but usually not. Some of the slopes are amazingly steep.
After watching the sun set over the dunes, we went for a night hike ON the dunes to see the stars. The haze from wildfires in the region kept us from seeing the stars in all of their majesty but the whole experience was majestic in its own glory! Another wonderful evening...
Mt. Lindsey, at 14,042 feet, was our 24th 14er and our first 14er in the Sangre de Cristo range. We climbed this peak on its north face from the Huerfano River Trailhead. There are many campsites on the road leading to the TH and at the TH. From the Lily Lake Trail, make sure to branch left off the trail. There is a sign at this point for Lily Lake, but not one for...
Short family hike with great views of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Trail involves short river section to see waterfall so be prepared for wet feet! We continued along Zapata trail a few kilometres until we reached a river crossing but you can go further if you have the time
