Hiking in Grand Teton National Park

One thing you will remember about Grand Teton National Park is that you won't have to spend much time on your approach. The range, topping out at 13,770 rises about 7,000 feet up from the base of Jackson Hole and the Snake River without foothills, so oxygen deprivation make take over sooner than you think.

The highest "hike" or climb, really is up the Grand. But this 40 mile long range has a myriad of other hikes for the less vertically included. Multi-day trips can include the Teton Crest, and the Cascade Canyon Loop over Paintbrush Divide while vigorous day trips include Lake Solitude and Lake Amphitheater.

If you want easier fare, try a hike past Bradley and Taggart Lakes or to Phelps Lake. If you have some small kids, try going around Jenny Lake to Inspiration Point (or take the boat across the lake). Whatever your choice, the views are never far up the trail.

Difficult: 5.4 miles, Full day
A hike into beautiful Garnet Canyon on the way up The Grand Teton. This is the route most climbs of the Grand take.

Walked from Jackson Lodge up to 2 Ocean Lake, so called because it straddles the continental divide, thus ending up in two oceans.  Also went to Grand View Point.   We had planned a loop, but a sudden storm came up, and a tree fell down across the path in front of us.  This convinced us to see if any nice people could give us a ride back.  We found some, I...

Twelve of us rode the tram from Teton Village to the 10,446' summit to hike to Marion Lake.  Shortly after the start of the return to the tram, I turned left (east) to hike down the mountain through Granite Canyon, emerging at the Granite Canyon Parking Area in Grand Teton National Park.

The destination was Holly Lake -- "if we can get there" -- up Paintbrush Canyon.  We knew there were patches of snow, most of which were comfortably navigable, but the last one we encountered blocked the trail completely and ran into a boulder field.  Neither route -- the fairly steep snow field nor the boulder field -- appealed to us.  The distance to Holly Lake from the parking lot is a little...

Having done a steep climb up into a snowy area the day before we were ready for a less strenuous but still attractive hike.  This walk takes one past four lakes (one large and three small) only the first of which is accessible by car.  There is only a little up and down, the trail is in good condition and there are frequently fantastic views of the various peaks including Mt Moran...
