San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park is one of
the finest examples of the climax mesic hammocks remaining in Florida.
The park is located to the northwest of Gainesville, in north Florida's
Alachua County. The limestone outcrops and extreme changes in elevation
provide conditions for at least 18 biological communities within the
hammock, including areas of sandhill, hydric hammock, upland pine, and
swamp. Thanks to the region's karst topography, sinkholes, steephead
springs, ponds, and small lakes dot the landscape....
More than 20 distinct biological communities provide a rich array of habitats for wildlife and livestock, including alligators, bison, horses and more than 270 species of birds. Exhibits and an audio-visual program at the visitor center explain the area´s natural and cultural history. A 50-foot-high observation tower near the visitor center provides a panoramic view of the preserve. Eight trails provide opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling.

First off, the name of the park is Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park. This was one of Teddy's projects back in the day to give people jobs with the CCC in the 1920's. If you are looking for a different side of FL... this is it. At times I thought I was back in NC!The trail is short and well marked. After the decent down the numerous flights of concrete...

In the midst of north Florida's sandy terrain and pine forests, a bowl-shaped cavity 120 feet deep leads down to a miniature rain forest. Small streams trickle down the steep slopes of the limestone sinkhole, disappearing through crevices in the ground. Lush vegetation thrives in the shade of the walls even in dry summers. A significant geological formation, Devil's Millhopper is a National Natural Landmark that has been visited by the curious...

There are four marked trails within Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park. These trails vary in length from a short 10-minute walk to a full three-hour hike that we recommend for the experienced hiker. The Ravine Ridge meanders along the upper ridge of the ravine between the ravine stairway and the mill site. Hikers can see the contrasts between the sandhill and ravine communities. The Loblolly Trail loop begins and ends...
