by autarkis on Mar 30, 2013
Grand Junction, Colorado, United States
Hiking | 5.8 miles (8.5 miles away)
Our first hike in Colorado since returning to the US.  A very nice hike almost completely downhill.  Starts with a steep descent on switchbacks down the side of Ute Canyon, and proceeds along the creek bed. After cresting a small gorge, the trail continues along the flat canyon bottom into dryer territory.  the trail stays in the canyons shadow well into the morning and then widens into the base igneous layer of rock.The...

Hiking | 13.1 miles (2.7 miles away)
The slick rock under  the Rainbow Bridge is extremely steep and requires climbing - not hiking - to get from the lower to the upper overlook. It is not part of the official trail - BLM strongly advises against taking it.

Mica Mine near Grand Junction, CO
by jsemmett on Jul 03, 2005
Grand Junction, Colorado
Hiking | 1.3 miles (13.2 miles away)
This is the real deal. Most mines one finds while hiking are dark pits, but this is a specacular house-sized inclusion of rose quartz within an inclusion of lava within the red sandstones characteristic of the Colorado National Monument.  And within the quartz are sheets of mica, or at least what is left after the really good stuff was carved out. Go see it and take your camera.
