Beautiful hike along the cliffs of Mendocino. Explore tide pools while enjoying amazing views in Northern California
Despite its small size, Mendocino's scenic location on a headland surrounded by the Pacific Ocean has made it extremely popular as an artist colony and with vacationers. Because it is less than four hours by car from the San Francisco Bay Area, it is a popular weekend getaway spot for Bay Area residents. The cliffs just southwest of the town's Main...
Short nature hike through a grove of 100 year old trees stunted by poor soil conditions.
You are about to see a forest where nature, practicing a form of bonsai, has created vegetation that is dwarfed and stunted. To learn how this came about, we need to examine the soils in which the stunted forest grows. At the beginning of the trail, there are tall trees and the soils is under a layer of fresh leaves and needles and the decomposing...
Trips
Drove through Jackson State Forest on hwy 20 on a whim. Decided to get out and hit one of the numerous utility roads we were driving past. Turned out about a half mile in there was a trail head that headed down into the valley. After about a mile we stumbled across some camp sites that look worth a second trip out. There's several service roads that run by where the camp sites...
Just a quick hike around the Cabrillo Lighthouse before hiking in Vann Damm State park.
Waterfall even runs in late summer!
Short hike from Caspar Little Lake Rd to the Russian Gulch Waterfall. I didn't recorded my entire trip with my GPS. Not quite sure how many miles it is but it took me 2 hours round trip to get there. Gorgeous hike. Gorgeous waterfall. From the road, just take North Boundary Trail then East Trail and follow the sign to the waterfall. Very simple.Slight elevation gain but overall very easy hike.I intend to re-visit...
Nice hike along Big River on a old log road. Very easy hike since there is no elevation change. Too bad this hike isn't a loop! Dogs on leash are welcome, be aware of bicyclists. I found a spot where I could access the river easily and let my dogs swim. Zoom in the map and you'll see my path to the water. To access this trail, take Big River Rd off Hwy1...

We arrived up north too late to start the Lost Coast, so we settled for a lovely stroll through the redwoods in Russian Gulch State Park. We passed through redwoods, Grand Firs, huckleberries, and wild Rhododendrons at first. After the crazy middle section through a dry pygmy desert landscape, we passed back through a gorgeous waterfall and then alongside alders, elders, and lovely wiggly telephone-cord vines for the last stretch back.
Not sure why the elevation is showing 9K????
