I chained together a series of small loops in the Western Section of  Eno River State Park, northwest of Durham, North Carolina. This is a great park for hiking -- lots of trails along creeks and the Eno River. Scenic even after the leaves have fallen; I imagine it's spectacular at peak season, but also pretty crowded. Trip write-up at Two-Heel Drive.

Hiking | 7.0 miles (6.0 miles away)
This is a really great trail!  My only regret is that we didn't start further west but the parking lot was pretty full.  This is a really fun section of the MTS trail with some nice elevation changes that take the trail from forested paths to rhododendron high points.  The trail is right next to the path the entire way. We hiked this on a Sunday and saw some other groups but not...

Easter Hike at Eno River
by jmpncsu on Mar 31, 2013

Hiking | 9.1 miles (5.4 miles away)
On Easter, I had scheduled a MST hike along the Eno River, continuing the hikes along the MST in the Triangle since finishing the Falls Lake Trail.  Despite the poor forecast and the fact that most of the hikers dropped out, I decided to hike anyway.  Driving to Durham, the rain was pretty heavy and I was having second thoughts about the hike, but by the time I got to West Point...

This morning, I went to Eno River to do hike #15 from 100 Classic Hikes, the second hike that I will miss for my honeymoon.  I parked along Rivermont Road and hiked the Pump Station Trail to the split and took Laurel Bluffs Trail to the end at Guess Road.  On the way back, I stopped to check out some of the sites along the river - Guess Mill Dam, Gebel Rocks,...

Hiking | 7.4 miles (5.8 miles away)
On Sunday, Sandy left with my mom to head up to Ohio for 10 days.  The weather was beautiful and it was finally starting to feel like spring, so what better way to enjoy the spring than going for a hike to see wildflowers.  I decided a good spot to see them would be Penny's Bend Nature Preserve in Durham.  The preserve is located right across the street from the western terminus...

Laurel Bluffs Trail - Eno River State Park
by trvljohn on Feb 25, 2012
Durham, North Carolina, United States
Hiking | 5.9 miles (5.8 miles away)
The Laurel Bluffs Trail is part of the Eastern Trails of Eno River State Park.  It is a 5 mile out and back trail.  As the name implies, there is lots of mountain laurel along the trail.  Although there were many cars parked on Rivermont Road, there were relatively few people on this trail.  Maps are available at the trailhead.

Mountains to Sea, Cabe Lands to Cole Mill Rd
by jpye on Dec 24, 2010
Durham, North Carolina, United States
Hiking | 2.9 miles (6.0 miles away)
This section of the Mountains to Sea trail just opened in 2010, winding through the pine-mixed hardwood forests of the Eno River State Park. This section offers a mix of flood plain and bluffs, a bit of history, and surprising quiet. The trail surface is simple, and much of this stretch still lacks trail markers.

Hiking | 9.4 miles (6.5 miles away)
Today, I led a hike along Section 22 of the Falls Lake Trail, starting on Red Mill Road just past the bridge over Ellerbe Creek.  We hiked in the woods for a bit and crossed a creek before coming out in a clearing with power lines.  Crossing over, we went back into the woods near the remains of an old railroad tressle over Ellerbe Creek where it feeds into Falls Lake.  The...
