Moderate trail through colorful Golden Canyon, Red Cathedral and Gower Gulch. Colorful badlands, canyon narrows and old borax mines are the most impressive sights there. 1.3 mile trail near Lane Mill (historical), California
Jack Gunn/Maltese Peak is about 1.3 miles long and located near Lane Mill (historical), California. The trail is great for hiking and normally takes 1-3 hours
A Death Valley hike at this crater who's name is Shoshone for "big basket in the rock."
This is a hike at the north end of Death Valley within 10 miles of Scotty's Castle. I started at the edge of the crater at the parking area behind the interpretive sign and hiked down the crater. It's loose gravel but the footing is OK. It's only 1/4 of a mile to the floor of the crater, but it's about a 500 foot drop. Coming back out is more difficult...

Hiking to a waterfall in Death Valley
This is a hike to a waterfall that generally flows year round in Death Valley. It's a moderately strenuous hike because it goes up a wash that has a lot of gravel and rocks over which to step. The name mystifies me, because there are no willow trees anywhere near here. This is a winter hike as summer temperatures in Death Valley make hiking very...
Many interesting mines and cabins to see, including Charles Manson Hideout
Camp nearby in the ghost town of Ballarat. Along the trail, see mines and outstanding Adopt-a-Cabins including Barker Ranch, once the hideout of serial killer Charles Manson and his gang. Other cabins include Russel Camp (our favorite) and the Geologist’s Cabin, popular because it is very tight and clean. The other cabins are mice infested and are...

Enjoy breathtaking scenery enroute to a hiking trailhead that goes to the top of 14,495-ft. Mount Whitney (hiking permit required). Only main roads are described here; for maximum fun, you’ll want to explore dozens of side roads...
Trips
Leaving the Salt Creek, we continued driving north on the hwy and eventually turned west towards Stovepipe Wells, passed Devil’s Cornfield, and Sand Dunes was on the right. We had planned ahead so we could see the sunset from the sand dunes. As we walked further away from the parking lot, the sand dunes was getting smoother and higher. Some of the dunes could get so high that we had to take...

On day 2 of our trip to Death Valley National Park we headed to Fall Canyon for a long day hike through canyon
narrows and to do some bouldering. We explored the first 4 1/2 miles of
the canyon gorge that lead us through spectacular deep, colorful, and
winding corridors.

A pretty desert wash hike, but the real attraction is several narrow slot canyons that come in on the south side. Some places are deep and dark enough to require a flashlight! Very cool place...
A short hike up Telephone Canyon in Death Valley National Park. It's high clearance 2WD to the trailhead from Emigrant Canyon road. Telephone Arch is small but interesting, Telephone Spring is long dry but the remains of the mill are interesting. A nice side canyon to the south with some narrows, and a few side washes one has a nice waterfall grotto perhaps 25 feet tall.

Spent the night at the Stovepipe Wells Lodge, which is one of the two lodging sites within Death Valley. The facility there is considered good in such a remote desert; with air conditioning and running water. Accommodation outside of the park is not really an option, as I didn’t see any towns or motels nearby when driving from Las Vegas. The 3 hrs drive from Vegas was basically along an area of...
Panamint Valley Dunes. About three miles of hiking straight across the desert to get to them from where you can leave a car. No trail. Distances are deceptive out here - even though they don't look too far away it's a long hike! Additional PhotosTrip Report
Hiked over Towne Peak to the SA-16 Albatross.
