A classic Bernegger hike. Off of Rt. 41 in CT, you take Under Mountain Trail (blue blazers) up to the Riga Junction where you meet the Appalachian Trail. A mile or so later you climb up to the top of Bear Mountain. Good view, good wild blueberries. Moderate hike. The dogs loved it. Check out the pictures.
Once a private vacation spot for women during the turn of the century from New York City...now a preservation... CT owned. One serious playground. An old train tressel used to run through, which was how the girls got to the Rossiter's estate. If you follow the bridal path down Tunnel Rd. you can find the old tunnel. Very cool. If you follow the West side of the Shepaug, you will...

Wallingford, Durham, Middlefield, Meriden, Connecticut, United States
Hiking | 5.6 miles
Hiking | 5.6 miles
From Route 66 the trail ascends gradually toward Beseck Ridge with views to the South and Southeast. As you reach the Ridge, long vistas across the Quinnipiac Valley come into view. They continue for most of the hike. The views across the valley are varied, with forests, subdivisions, factories, and Black Pond in sight against a backdrop of the far side of the Quinnipiac Valley and the Hanging Hills of Meriden. Although...

Mattabesett Trail – Route 17 to Howd Road Pistapaug Pond

Durham, Connecticut, United States
Hiking | 1.9 miles
Hiking | 1.9 miles
After crossing a beautiful little waterfall a few yards uphill from Route 17, this segment of the trail climbs up, over and along Pistapaug Mountain. The 400 foot ascent is moderate, with no exciting scrambles. Views of Pistapaug Pond appear as you reach the top. Views of the pond gradually expand and improve. Farms, horse corrals, large houses and water company land across the lake are visible through the trees. In some...
We wanted a short relatively easy hike, chose this hike from AMC'S Best Day Hikes in Connecticut. Even though the temperature was about 40, it felt colder due to no sun and a bit of a breeze. The hike was easy, but we missed the easy routes to the two scenic viewpoints. The book mentioned the Mountain Laurel and there was indeed plenty. We both want to go back to see if...
Fun and safe hike with your kids.
Very interesting area with significant historical and natural value. Over 7 miles of trails. You can read more about The Sheep Farm (Groton Open Space Association property) here. Also, you can download a pdf file of a very interesting and more detailed paper on The Sheep Farm by Susan Sutherland (a member of the GOSA) here.
I was out caching, and I thought to myself if I am going to hike this entire trail end to end I should share it with the world.
I am not big on fishing, but I was hiking this trail and noticed that a lot of people appear to use it for fishing so I thought I would post it for all to see.
Follow the Race Brook Trail along the water to the Pine Trail (purple) and then return on the Wepawaug Trail (white) back to the parking lot.
#3 Connecticut High Point | Round MountainThird high point on my way to summit all of USA high points. Started off an AMC parking lot on Mt. Washington Road in Connecticut... went into Mass then into Conn to summit Round Mountain - back down into Mass to Summit Mt. Frissell and then back down into CT to hit the CT/MA line marker.
This area has four main trails running north & south:The east trail runs high along a ridge. Very easy....barefoot friendly if you are into that. The northern portion of this trail seems a little more developed, possibly planned for future development (judging by the white posts in this area). The West trail is generally lower in elevation in some spots and has some difficult wet bogs to get through (one especially bad). Plan...
