Annual event hosted by Kris and Randy
The idea of an FA run is casual, yet minorly serious, competition with no prizes, little support and a great atmosphere. This course makes a great training run or an even better day hike for those looking to get to know Lookout Mountain. There are wide and level portions (Upper Truck), tricky descent and thigh burning ascent (John Smartt and Lower...
One lap around the reservoir.
TVA Raccoon Mountain is my favorite place to run. With a variety of trail options and unmatched views of the surrounding mountains the venue is an example of what can happen when you allow recreational access to public land. It is clean, well used and represents the nature of the city and surrounding area. Thanks to the members of SORBA for the time,...
A great training run or day hike in Prentice Cooper WMA.
Coming in at just under 10 miles Mullen's Cove Loop is the bulk of the Rock/Creek River Gorge 10.2 mile trail race which occurs on the last Saturday in March. This incredibly diverse trail lies within the 24,686 acre Prentice Cooper Wilderness Management Area. This entire loop is part of the Cumberland Trail. A significant length of this trail hangs...
The shorter version of the Rock/Creek River Gorge Trail Race.
This is a 6.5 mile course along the Cumberland Trail in Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area just outside of Chattanooga, TN. The course is mostly shaded taking you along a route following the natural terrain features from Indian Rockhouse to Snooper's Rock with a couple of small water crossings and numerous rock formations. At Snooper's Rock you...
Easily accessible, popular route from park entrance to Boulder Point and back.
This run in Enterprise South Nature Park is a quick and easy 4-miler. Park at the lot to the left of the visitor's center and proceed down Poe Run Path. The shaded trails take you past several old ammunition bunkers and the mountain bike parking lot before a short uphill section. Turn left onto Boulder Point Loop (BPT) (blue signs) and run out to Boulder...
A new addition to the Salomon/Rock Creek Trail Series.
This is a new addition to the Salomon/Rock Creek Trail Series for 2012. Taking place at Enterprise South Nature Park in Hamilton County, Tennessee, the mostly shaded course provides the 10K runners with the opportunity to explore the hiking trails within the nature park. The 10K course is set on mulch trails allowing for side-by-side running from start...
Premier event in Salomon/Rock Creek Trail Series
The Stump Jump is a challenging ultramarathon trail race held annually on the first Saturday of October along the Cumberland Trail just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. The course has 3 sections, sections 1 and 3 out to Indian Rockhouse and back, and section 2 Mullen's Cove Loop, which is currently listed separately in the guide. Begin at Shackleford...
The final Salomon/ Rock Creek Trail Series event of the year. **Portions of course are closed except on raceday.
This course features a tour of Lookout Mountain in both Tennessee and Georgia offering stunning bluff views, creek crossings and waterfalls. Beginning at Covenant College atop the mountain you are treated to scenic views of Lookout Valley and downtown Chattanooga along the Bluff and Mountain Beautiful Trails before descending to the Nature Center...
A rarely used 12-mile loop in Prentice Cooper WMA.
Pot Point Loop is an add-on to the Cumberland Trail in Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area. Seldom used, the track presents a peaceful day hike. Begin at the parking area for Snooper's Rock along Tower Road. I recommend going in a clockwise direction to allow starting with bluff views and finishing along the creek.
Full description of trail race course.
This 6k trail course is located on the Biology Trails of Souther Adventist University. The course winds its way through the forest on family friendly trails with multiple other options for people who want more or less distance. This protected forest is located on White Oak Mountain just outside of Collegedale TN and is very popular with students and...
The 7th race in Rock/Creek Trail Series
The Upchuck 50K is a wilderness trail run/race on the Cumberland Trail just outside of Chattanooga based on the experience of 2 local runners. The guys were on a weekend training run and stopped at a convenience store about halfway through the 31 mile route. Runner A ate lightly while runner B ate heavily. Soon thereafter runner B proceeded to disgorge...
Running the Pinhoti Trail from Dalton to Snake Creek Gap
The Georgia Jewel is an annual event held in September with 3 distance choices: 35, 50 or 100 miles. The races all begin and end in the lower gravel lot of the North Georgia Convention Center in Dalton, Georgia. There is a road section followed by a steep climb to Dug Mountain where you are deposited on the single track of the Pinhoti Trail. The course...
A GUTS trail race at Fort Mountain State Park.
Mystery Mountain Marathon is a race which takes place in October at Fort Mountain State Park outside of Chatsworth, Georgia. Run by GUTS (Georgia Ultrarunning and Trailrunning Society), this race features an awesome, but tough course with stunning views and plenty of scenery. I recommend it because it embodies what trail running is all about.

Stone Door TrailDescribed as an easy trail that leads from the parking lot/ranger station to the overlooks, and then ultimately to the top of the Stone Door - this trail was just that. Partially paved and partially dirt, this was an easy first mile into the area. The route only reflects .6 of the mile because I almost always forget to turn my Garmin on!Big Creek Gulf TrailDespite it being described as...

The belly of the Gizzard is one of the toughest sections of trail I've been on with several rock fields to cross. The scenery is beautiful though, so it's worth it. My wife and I hiked it up to Raven Point for lunch and took the easier Dog Hole Trail back to the parking area.

via Stone Door (SD), Big Creek Gulf (BCG), Ranger Falls (RF), Greeter Falls (GF), and Big Creek Rim (BCR) trailsA coworker (who is a very accomplished hiker) from an out-of-town office was visiting for the week, and we decided to take a day off for some hiking. We selected the Savage Gulf, as it is one of the most beautiful and rugged parts of Middle Tennessee. We arrived not too long after...
