Trips
Jill and Dan walked this hike in Big Bend on Tuesday, Apri 14, 2009.
This was a solo trip, because Mike didn't want to go, or didn't think he could make it.I didn't see many people, or any animals, so it was nice and quiet... sort of creepy.Took a 45 min siesta on the south rim. I propped my self up on a rock, fairly close to the ledge. I would open my eyes and just see for maybe a hundred miles or so.
I was here for work as myself and a coworker were assisting with some fuel reduction (brush cutting) at Panther Junction. We finished up a little early one day and thought this would make for a good hike. He has been here many times, but this was my first visit to Big Bend and the first hike I did here in the park.It was a typical hot, May afternoon, but not unbearable....
Went to Big Bend with a few of my buddies who are amateur photographers to hopefully glean some knowledge in the world of photography.
Take your time and plan thoroughly! We watched the weather for weeks leading into our trip and still we were caught by surprise! expect the unexpected. Also keep kiddos close by- very close! Their was a mountain lion attack on a small child on our second to last day there which left him severely injured in the Chisos Basin parking lot. Also if you plan to get out to the Rim plan...
A group of guys from our church took an awesome trip down to Big Bend to camp in the Chisos Basin and engage in several day hikes. This trip was a long day heading up Laguna Meadows, walking to the South Rim and walking along it and coming down the other side and eventually down Pinnacles Trail. A very long day but probably the best scenery that exists in the entire state...
Nice high desert day hike or horseback ride on an old ore road. Steady gain with fine views of dark canyons and the Chisos, nearly all of BBNP and Mexico. Lovely birding basin 3/4 to summit .Antennas on summit. No water, scant shade. This is a much better approach than the southern route from BBNP which intersects at the basin. Great hike for first day acclimation and reconnoitering the park.Trail head is 20...
Ascent of Amon Carter Peak from The Window trail in Big Bend national Park. This track also includes a side trip to the Window which adds little to the mileage and is worthwhile to make if you have the time. The route finding off the trail is difficult and filled with various spined plants who punish every misstep. The views from the top are quite rewarding.
Southern approach from within BBNP. Sandy wash for 7 miles. Little shade. No water
This was day 2 of our trip to Big Bend with a group of guys from our church. This was a great short hike. We packed up our last day and went and hung out by the river trying to hit Mexico with rocks before heading back. The perfect ending for the trip.
