"The view from San Jacinto is the most sublime spectacle to be found anywhere on this earth!” - John Muir

Naturalist John Muir wrote of San Jacinto Peak, “The view from San Jacinto is the most sublime spectacle to be found anywhere on this earth!” Who am I to argue with Muir? At 10,834′ Mt. San Jacinto does indeed reward the determined hiker with wonderful views. You can see the inland empire, Palm Desert, the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains,...

Massacre Canyon is about 2.7 miles long and located near Gilman Hot Springs, California. The trail is great for geocaching and normally takes a half day. From the road you don't have a clue what beauty lies just to the north. When the rains come the canyon floor will be impassable.

San Gorgonio is the tallest mountain in Southern California, and a right of passage for serious hikers in the area. At 11,503′, “Old Grayback” provides an excellent high altitude training for those preparing to summit Mt. Whitney, and only 90 minutes away from Orange County. Difficult: 15.7 miles, Full day
A long 16.5 mile day-hike with nearly 5,000 feet of vertical gain, and one of the best-kept secrets of SoCal.

One of the best-kept secrets of Southern California is San Bernardino Mountain. Just five miles away from the highest peak in SoCal — San Gorgonio — San Bernardino tops out at a respectable 10,649 feet. Hiking from Angelus Oaks, this 16-mile out-and-back trail climbs over 4,600 vertical feet. It makes for a very long day hike or a great weekend...

Lake Perris State Recreation Area
Perris, California, United States (18.9 miles away)

Hidden among rock-studded hills, Lake Perris State Recreation Area’s 8,800 acres of broad valley are bounded on three sides by low ridges. The Bernasconi Hills and the Russell, Apuma and Armada Mountains obscure the view of nearby cities. Inland, the San Bernardino, San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains, snow-capped in winter months, stand tall in...

Planning on attacking Southern California's mother of endurance hikes? Try getting a taste first to help better prepare.

This hike was to get familiar with the C2C trail of Mt. San Jacinto for future attempts and the goal of reaching the summit in the future.  The idea was to get an estimate on climbing rate, time, weather/climate change, terrain, trail maintenance, challenge level, and provisions/gear needed to successfully climb the mountain. Future attempts to follow.

San Jacinto - Marion Trail

Pine Wood, California, United States
Hiking | 11.8 miles (12.3 miles away)
Despite all the reports that this is a difficult trail it was very straightforward, taking 3h15m up and 2h20m down. It is not that scenic as you're mostly in trees, and there are no difficult areas (would grade class 1) with 100ft of boulder hopping at top (class 2). Nonetheless the peak offers some of the best views around.

Hiked this as the finale to my Six Pack of Peaks training plan for the JMT. Terrific weather and a long, strenuous (but rewarding) hike. I really enjoyed the forested section that paralleled Vivian Creek. The higher sections are very exposed, but offer terrific panoramic views. This is an all-day affair, so plan for an early start. We started hiking at 6am, and with breaks, got back to our car at 6pm....

This trip from July 2009 starts on the South Fork Trail, passes Dry Lake and connects with the Sky High Trail.  The descent loops back to the South Fork trail by crossing the Dollar Lake saddle. Our original intent was to head up the South Fork trail via Dollar Lake Saddle, but along the way we decided to make a longer day of things and made the loop passing Dry Lake up to...

Hiking | 12.9 miles (16.7 miles away)
Here's a bunch of geotagged photos that I took on a walk up to Tahquitz Peak and Red Tahquitz from the South Ridge Trailhead in Idyllwild, Calif. I've been up to both peaks before, but never via the South Ridge trail. I'm glad we went that way because the south ridge trail is a quiet and beautiful trail that winds up a steep boulder-strewn ridge to the summit with awesome views all...

Hiking | 29 miles (15.1 miles away)
The 17 peak San Gorgonio traverse was one hike I’ve been wanting to do for awhile now. I was finally was able to persuade two of my good hiking friends, Brian Mason and Bill Simpson to accompany me over Labor Day weekend. I had mapped out the traverse from Fish Fork trailhead and ending at Angelus Oaks trailhead, which worked out to around 37 miles. Bill suggested a few changes, which consisted...

Some pictures from an exploratory walk up Whitewater Canyon. Planned to go all the way to the Middle Fork Jumpoff, but only made it about halfway. Lots of places to explore up here, and tons of life. Sign of bear and bighorns all over the place... Take a look at the photo descriptions along the tracklog for info about the sites!

Hiking | 24 miles (10.8 miles away)
This day hike, while listed at 24.5 miles, actually tracked at 26.5. It includes six peaks from the Hundred Peaks Section (HPS) of the Sierra Club. The six peaks in order were; Dragons Head, Bighorn Mountain, San Gorgonio, Jepson, Little Chartlon, and Charlton. We originially set out to include six additional peaks (Dobbs, Alto Diablo, Shields, Anderson, San Bernadino East, San Bernadino, but simply ran out of time as we were moving...

Hiking | 22 miles (11.4 miles away)
We were pretty weak on Saturday, hiking in only around seven or eight miles before setting up camp at Saxton Camp around 8,300. The second day we planned to hike to Dollar Lake Saddle then cut across the San Bernardino divide to East San Bernardino Peak and down a trace-trail back to the truck. We got as far as Alta Diablo Peak (or so we thought) at 10,550. Turns...
