The thike is actually a 2.7 mile hike. We started recording at the top. The drive from Jamestown to the trailhead is only paved about 2/3 the way. At the end of Shell Rd, you can either park along side the road and walk the rest of the way (advised if you do not have an SUV or high clearance vehicle), or open the gate, cross the cattle guard, and close the...
Beatiful day for a hike up to the top of this lava flow. Great views in all directions from the top. Decided to park at the gate and hike in to the trail-head instead of opening the gate and driving the rough dirt road for about a mile. I wouldn't recommend trying it unless you have a pretty high-clearance vehicle. Lots of shade on the trail as it winds it's way up...
This is short trip on a city-maintained trail that provides great views of Sonora and the outlying areas. This trail gets hot - real hot - in the summer. There are several places to park. I chose the Seventh Day Adventist parking lot, but Rotary Park and the Alpine Lane lot (when open) are other options.More information on this trail can be found at:http://www.sonoraca.com/visitsonora/dragoonpage.htm
This trip is best taken in winter or early spring, when the grass is green and the temperatures are moderate. Watch out for mountain bikers, as they are allowed to use this route, although it is lightly traveled. Overall, it's a very pleasant walk with great views of New Melones Reservoir.Start at the Lupine Day use area and walk past the bathrooms and you will hit the trail. It's basically one big...
The Red Hills Nature trail is a nice hike to see wildflowers. We were a little early this trip, but will be back. Dogs like it this time of the year because of the seasonal creek that runs along the most parts of the trail.
