Set foot on a glacier on an excursion from Skagway, Alaska
This is an opportunity for day-tripping outdoors enthusiasts to set foot on a glacier, in the context of Alaska cruise ship excursions. No doubt more intensive experiences are available without the 6-9-hour time frame of cruise ship port stops; this is the only available excursion on Carnival Cruises that allows actual feet on ice without paying for...

Hiking at a good speed, it is about an hour to get to the glacier. Not bad for the reward of drinking glacier water I must say! You\'ll have to semi-climb some rocks, so may be don\'t bring grandma. Unless of course grandma is extreme.
We started at the Jodfur extrance to Kincaid Park. We walked toward the water, past the motorcross area. Then walk down the steep trail to the mudflats. We walked then about a mile or two and then hit gravel. When you finally walk long enough to where there is real sand, then look up and you'll see a very steep trail that takes you back up the bluff to the ridge. Then...
With a few hours to kill before our scheduled train trip up White Pass, I decided to get out on my own and do a little hiking in the hills surrounding Skagway. After crossing the RR tracks and starting up the trail it didn't take long for it to occur to me that hiking alone in the state with more dangerous animals per capita than any other might not be the wisest...
The Mt Roberts Trail is a popular hike around Juneau, AK.
There two trail heads. The main trail begins alongside Basin Road, about a half mile outside of
town. Basin Road provides access to other trails in the area as well. Another
trail head begins by climbing a stairway at the end of Third Street. We used the Basin Road route to
hike up. The lower section of trail is thickly wooded with spruce, hemlock,
aspen, and...
This hike was part of the Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel) Program entitled "Alaska's National Parks: From the Mountains to the Sea." It was planned as a short hike from the trailhead, located near the George Parks HIghway (Route 3) bridge over the Nenana River, to the first of the Triple Lakes. The trailhead is not far from McKinley Lodge and the Denali Education Center. About six of the hikers continued on to...
Walk around the fields to test GPS accuracy
Today is Birdathon day. We hike slowly trying to find as many species of birds as we can. The slow breakup this year rendered some of our normally populated ponds still icy, and so our loist is a bit shorter than normal. You can still pledge to our cause, until the end of May.
A cold Saturday hike on the ridge at Ester Dome. It was 5 degrees colder (-17F) at the top than it was at home, which is not normal for winter time. Started cloudy, but cleared up on the way back up the hill.

Friends of ours were driving out to Chena Hot Springs (after doing a team run of the Equinox Marathon), so we too the opportunity to do a free car shuffle and did the one-way trip from Angel Rocks to Chena Hot Springs. We are about a week late, since almost all the Birch and Aspen had shed their leaves (though see the next to last picture). Nice day. A bit windy on...
We hiked to the creek to get some water and then further up the valley. Stopped several times to watch Caribou, Sheep and several raptors, including two Golden Eagles flying along the mountainsides to our N.I also hiked up above the campsite, but forgot the GPS.
The Chatanika was swollen due to some heavy rains, so we found a little creek to hike up and down.
Nice little day hike. Still a little snowy and muddy though. The lake was frozen over. We saw some bear tracks. The trail passed by Cowee meadows cabin, and eventually ended up at the beach. This would be a great hike during the summer!
